Cycling is one of the best ways to stay in shape and get around in a modern city. Unfortunately bicycles, like any mechanical device, can experience problems when you least expect them. Having a cycling specific multi tool is one of the best ways to prepare for minor emergencies and day to day adjustments. Today we’ll take you through some of the best cycling multi tools on the market to help you pick out the one that fits your needs.

Best Bike Multi Tools

Cycling multi tools are very different from the standard Leatherman/Gerber multi tools we usually cover. They’re much more specialized and lack most of the tools you tend to think of when you picture a multi tool. Almost all of the tools on this list actually look like a very fat swiss army knife. Instead of can openers, pliers, and saw blades you’ll find lots of wrenches and other repair tools.

If you’ve ever been on a long bike ride you understand all the little things that can go wrong. A well made cycling tool includes tools to adjust everything from your saddle orientation to the drive chain and braking system. They’re built to be extremely lightweight and compact while still being able to stand up to pretty demanding tasks. Here’s ten of the best cycling multi tools on the market today.

It’s on the heavy side compared to many of the tools on this list but it does have a more comprehensive tool loadout than many competing tools.

Topeak Hexus II Multi Tool

Topeak Cycling Multi Tool

Buy from Amazon

The Topeak Hexus II uses a standard fold out design with a number of removable pieces. It includes 16 different tools fitted into a 3.7 in long, 5.88 oz body. One of its biggest features is the full size chain breaker. Other tools include:

  • Seven Hex Wrenches
  • Two Spoke Wrenches
  • Cast CrMo Steel Chain Breaker
  • Steel Wire Chain Hook
  • Two Tire Levers
  • Phillips Head
  • Flathead
  • T25 Torx Bit

The Hexus II was designed to work just as well on a mountainside as it does on a daily commute. It includes all the tools expected on a cycling multi tool but also adds in some interesting twists. The composite tire levers are both removable and give you an extra set of tools. The larger one includes a hex wrench sized to increase your torque when working with the chain breaker, a feature we really appreciated.

All in all this was a well designed and durable tool that’s small enough to go on any trip.

Topeak Alien II Multi Tool

Topeak Alien II bicycle multi tool

Buy from Amazon

The Topeak Alien II is one of the most comprehensive bike multi tools we’ve seen. It includes 31 different functions packed into a two part body just 3.4 in long. It weighs 10.2 oz though so it does tip the scales a bit. Tools on the Alien II include:

  • 8 Hex Wrenches
  • Chain Breaker
  • Steel Chain Hook
  • Three Open Wrenches
  • Phillips Head
  • Flathead
  • 9mm Box Wrench
  • Mini Pedal Wrench
  • Serrated Blade Knife

  • Air Release Button
  • Bottle Opener

Just going by that list you can see that the Alien II is absolutely full to bursting with functionality. It’s also durable, extremely portable, and well designed. Each of the included tools does exactly what they’re designed for. Its multipart design really makes using the tool you need much simpler than on other bulkier tools. It also comes with a nylon pouch to protect your tools from water and road dust.

The only real flaw we saw with it was its hefty weight and relatively high price compared to most of the other tools on this list. It’s a great tool from a trusted brand that comes very close to being a true toolbox in your pocket.

Topeak Mini 20 Pro Mini Tool

Topeak Pro Mini Cycling Multi Tool

The Topeak Mini 20 Pro Mini Tool is a well built tool that includes a good mix of tools in a sturdy forged aluminum body. It’s lighter and more compact than many multi tools on this list, coming in at just 3 in long and weighing 5.28 oz. Despite this small size it comes with 20 different tools. These include:

  • Eight Hex Wrenches
  • Phillips Head
  • Flathead
  • Bottle Opener
  • CrMo Steel Chain Tool
  • Steel Chain Hook
  • Four Spoke Wrenches
  • T10 Torx Driver

  • Tire Lever

The Mini 20 Pro is built to be the only tool you need on the track or the trail. It comes with a neoprene carry case and is extremely durable. It’s noticeably smaller than many other tools on this list but doesn’t sacrifice much in the way of functionality. There is a price for this of course, as the Mini 20 Pro is one of the more expensive tools we reviewed. If you’re looking for a high end tool definitely check the Mini 20 Pro out.

Birzman E-Version 15 Function Multi Tool

Birzman Bike Multi Tool

Buy from Amazon

The E-Version from Birzman is an attractive little tool that includes 15 different tools. It has a hardened aluminum body and all stainless steel tools. It comes in at just over 2.7 in long and weighs 4.5 oz. It’s tool loadout includes:

  • Seven Hex Wrenches
  • Four Spoke Wrenches
  • Chain Breaker
  • Flathead
  • Phillips Head
  • T25 Torx Wrench

The E-Version 15 is one of the smallest and lightest tools we reviewed. Despite this it is quite durable and highly functional. All of the included tools are sized well given the overall size of the tool’s body. We did notice that the chain breaker attachment rattled noticeably unless it was stowed in a bag or pouch but other than that we’re quite happy with it.

Pedro’s Rx Multi Tool

Pedros Cycling Multi Tool

Buy from Amazon

The Pedro’s Rx Multi Tool, commonly known as the RxM, is a 12 function folding multi tool designed to provide cycling essentials. It uses a 4 in, 6.6 oz composite handle and stainless steel tools. These include tools like:

  • Six Hex Wrenches
  • Four Spoke Wrenches
  • Flathead
  • Removable Chain Tool

The RxM has fewer tools than many other multi tools on this list but the ones it includes are very well made. The large size of the handle also gives you better purchase when working than some other tools do. We really liked that the chain tool is removable, allowing you to use the hex wrenches at the same time. Overall this is a quality tool in a good form factor.

Blackburn Wayside Multi Tool

Blackburn Wayside Cycling Multi Tool

Buy from Amazon

The Blackburn Wayside has a more innovative design than many other cycling multi tools. It provides you with 19 individual functions in a 3.4 in 7 oz package. These functions are achieved using tools like:

  • Five Removable Hex Wrenches
  • Attached 8mm Hex Wrench
  • Locking Serrated Knife
  • Chain Tool
  • Chain Assembly Hook
  • T25 Torx Driver
  • T30 Torx Driver
  • Three Spoke Wrenches
  • Flathead
  • Disc Brake Spreader
  • Presta Valve Core Tool

The Wayside uses a standard fold out design but incorporates a very nice set of removable hex wrenches. Instead of folding out, these wrenches have an L bend style and pop right out of the tool to let you get into those hard to reach spaces. It’s a bit on the heavy side, especially given it’s relatively small size, but it does make up for it in added durability. Overall we thought the unique design outweighed any other flaw on the Wayside.

LEZYNE RAP 21 CO2 Multi Tool

Lezyne co2 cycling multi tool

Buy from Amazon

The RAP 21 from LEZYNE is another cycling multi tool with a unique twist to it. It provides you with 21 different tools, including a dedicated CO2 dispenser valve. This allows you to fill your road bike tires from a standard CO2 cartridge without issue. It’s just under 3.2 in long and weighs 6.3 oz. It includes tools such as:

  • Seven Hex Wrenches
  • Three Spoke Wrenches
  • Open End 10mm
  • Open End 8mm
  • Tire Lever
  • Chain Breaker
  • Phillips Head
  • Flathead
  • T25 Torx Driver
  • T30 Torx Driver
  • Bottle Opener
  • Disk Brake Wedge
  • CO2 Dispenser

Other than the CO2 dispenser the RAP 21 includes all the standard tools needed for basic maintenance or emergency repair. The ability to easily fill your tires with CO2 is honestly pretty great. LEZYNE did a great job on the execution of the RAP 21 as well. It’s well built, with tools that fold out easy and a sturdy body that can stand up to frequent use.

Topeak The Mini 9 Bicycle Tool

Topeak Mini 9 Bike Multi Tool

Buy from Amazon

The Mini 9 from Topeak is one of the smallest cycling multi tools available. It comes with just nine different tools, all wrenches or screwdrivers. It weighs a featherlight 3.24 oz and is just 2.6 in long. It includes tools such as:

  • Seven Hex Wrenches
  • Phillips Head
  • T25 Torx Driver

The Mini 9 is great if you just think you’ll need to adjust a few things on your bike. It’s extremely small and portable but lacks the all up repair capability of other tools. If this is your only tool you won’t be able to repair a broken chain, remove a tire, or adjust your spokes. We like the Mini 9 for what it is but definitely wouldn’t want it as our only tool on a longer distance ride.

Crank Brothers Y 15 Multitool

Crank Brothers Y 15 cycling multi-tool

Buy from Amazon

The Y 15 from Crank Brothers is a cycling multi tool that really tries to break the mold. Unlike most cycling tools that have a fold out design it incorporates 15 tools in a triangular swivel system. It’s also a bit larger than most other tools on this list, coming in at 7.9 oz for a 5 in frame. It includes:

  • Seven Hex Wrenches
  • Patch Kit
  • Phillips Head
  • Flat Head
  • Two Spoke Wrenches
  • T10 Torx Driver
  • T25 Torx Driver
  • Chain Breaker

Other than its interesting design the only major standout on the Y 15 is the included patch kit. We love that it has a place for this as a flat tire is one of the most common incidents you’ll encounter while cycling. Overall the workmanship and materials of the Y 15 were excellent. It feels quite heavy duty and well made.

Best Cycling Multi Tool Buyers Guide

Buying a cycling multi tool requires a different set of parameters than the ones you’d use for buying a general use one. There are very specific tools needed to properly maintain and repair a bicycle. Some of them will be familiar to laymen while others will be fairly unknown to anyone who isn’t an experienced cyclist. Here’s a basic overview of what features to look for in a high quality cycling tool.

Hex keys

Hex keys, also known as allen wrenches, are one of the most commonly used tools in bicycle repair. Every cycling multi tool on this list includes several different sizes to allow adjustments. You shouldn’t even consider a cycling tool that doesn’t includes at least five to six different varieties.

Screwdrivers

Screwdrivers are one of the most useful tools to have on hand no matter what activity you’re participating in. Having both a phillips and flathead screwdriver is pretty much essential for any basic repair or adjustment on a bicycle. If you can we recommend you get a cycling multi tool that has multiple sizes of each. This makes it much more likely you’ll be able to correct any issues while out and about.

Torx drivers

Torx drivers were designed to allow higher levels of torque to be applied to a screwhead. They’re commonly used on parts that require a very tight seal to prevent accidental or vibrational loosening. Recently, torx screws have begun popping up in the disk brake assemblies of bicycles. In most cases you’ll only need a T10, T25, or T30 torx bit, so look for these sizes on any multi tool you’re considering.

Chain splitter

Chain splitters are known by many different names, including chain breakers, or chain tools. They’re designed to let you ‘break’ a bicycle chain in a repairable way. The basic design of a bike chain uses flat plates connected together with a pin in such a way that they allow unidirectional movement.

Modern bike chains are available in several different configurations and materials depending on the type of bike and its price. Make sure to check that your bicycle’s chain is repairable with a given multi tool’s chain splitter.

Tire Levers

Tire levers are used to remove a bicycle tire from the rim for repair or replacement. If you pick up a nail or just wind up with a flat you’ll need to reseat the tire to get a proper seal. A well made tire lever allows you to do this quickly and efficiently. You’ll want to look for plastic and composite tire levers that give you a good bit of space to work with.

Spoke keys

Spoke keys or spoke wrenches are used to adjust the tension on the individual spokes of a bicycle wheel. They allow you to quickly loosen or tighten up the spokes to bring your wheel back to a perfect circle. Look for one that fits into tight spaces well and is easy to turn. If you can, try out the spoke key on a multi tool before you buy as it’s probably going to be one of the most bike specific tools you’ll need.

Blades

Having a good quality knife blade on your cycling multi tool isn’t as common as it should be. There are lots of situations that require a cutting tool or something to use for gentle scraping. If possible get one with serrated and straight blades to cover a wider range of uses.

Conclusion

Cycling multi tools are very different from your average Leatherman. They rarely fold, only occasionally include a knife blade, and almost never have pliers. Instead they provide you with the specialized tools needed to keep a high end road bike or beater mountain bike rolling smoothly wherever you may be.

Figure out whether you want a compact set of basic tools or a larger, more comprehensive multi tool. The Topeak Alien II is probably your best bet if you want to be prepared for anything. It includes the most tools overall and is very well made, if also really heavy.

If you’d prefer a lightweight tool for ultralight cyclists we recommend the Birzman E-Version 15. It’s small and quite light but still covers all your bases for basic repairs. The Topeak Mini 9 is great for short distance rides but lacks the repair capabilities of other larger tools.
