Buyers Guide to Buying the Best Archery Target

The best archery target depends on what kind of archery you practice. There are different targets optimized for hunters, sport shooters, and those participating in competitions.

Picking out the best one really depends on how you intend to use it, what you’re willing to spend, and how long you want it to work for.

Price

There’s a broad range of archery target prices depending on the type and capability of the target. They start at just a few dollars for printed paper targets designed to stick onto bales of hay or other materials, and go up to several hundred for high-quality 3D targets with all the features you could desire.

Types of Target

There are several major types of archery targets available. The type of target you choose plays a big role in how well it works and how easy it is to use.

Paper Targets (Bulls-Eye Targets) – The oldest and most basic archery targets are your standard paper targets tacked onto a wood backing material. These are functionally identical to the targets that have been used for centuries.

They have the benefit of being cheap, widely available, and made in literally thousands of different patterns and configurations.

3D Targets (Animal Targets) – 3d targets are a really cool development especially made for hunters. They allow you to practice your archery on a target that looks just like a deer, turkey, elk, etc.

They’re heavier and more expensive than paper targets but usually made of highly weather resistant and reusable materials.

Foam Block Targets (Cube Targets) – Foam target blocks have the same functionality of paper targets, just in a much more reusable and weather resistant form. Most look like nothing so much as large foam cools with targets painted on the side.

They’re lightweight, easy to put in place, and highly resilient. You can shoot foam targets hundreds of times before they need to be replaced.

Bag Targets – Bag targets are designed for repeated use and built with longevity in mind. They’re basically just a target bag that’s filled with synthetic material, usually a fused layer.

They stop arrows effectively and make retrieval easy. They’re also reasonably priced and widely available. The majority will also have metal grommets, carry handles, and the ability to switch out the inner material.

Self Healing Material

One of the biggest advances in modern archery targets was the development of self healing materials. This allows you to shoot the same area of a target multiple times without a problem.

Self healing materials work because of their soft nature and tight makeup. By removing the arrow carefully the material snaps back into place and is ready to be used again.

Modern layered arrow targets offer excellent stopping power while also being easy to remove the arrow. They’re also some of the best targets from the standpoint of durability.

Arrow Retrieval

Removing an arrow from a target is a tricky thing. If you’re not careful you can damage the arrow or the target. There are arrow puller tools that can help with this and make it much easier to remove your arrows.

Layered targets are the best material from the point of arrow retrieval. They use friction rather than force to stop your arrow, allowing you to remove it with much less strain.

Size and Thickness

The most basic archery targets are little more than thin wooden boards that paper targets can be applied to. These have been used for centuries and work well, but can’t match the features of modern targets.

Thicker targets with larger sizes allow lots of really useful features to be built in. These include things like increased durability, greater reusability, and easier arrow retrieval.

They also make it less likely shots from one side of the target will overlap with shots from the other side. This can reduce the overall lifespan of your target.

Durability

It should go without saying, but your archery target should be able to survive being shot with an arrow. The last thing you want is a target than breaks apart after just a few shots.

Depending on where you’re setting it up you’ll need to balance durability with portability, size, and weight.

Grommets

Targets with metal grommets are a lot more flexible than those without. They allow you to suspend your target from a tree or pole.

This makes it possible to practice shots at different elevations. It also gives you a lot more leeway in where you set up your target.

Target is Arrow Compatible

Not every target will work with every type of arrow and bow. Some targets just aren’t thick enough to stop the flight of an arrow shot from a high-powered bow or crossbow.

You need to make sure your target has the ability to safely stop your arrow. It should also be made of materials designed for easy retrieval.

The type of point you’re using also comes into play. If you’re planning to shoot broadheads you’ll need a specific type of target.

The vast majority of targets can handle field points without any difficulty.

Portability

Weight and portability are big factors when choosing an archery target. If you’ve got a large enough property you can set up a dedicated archery range and leave your targets in place.

For the rest of us though it’s really useful to be able to pick up and move around targets easily.

Weather Resistance

Wood and paper archery targets need to be properly stored when not in use. If they’re caught in the rain the paper is basically done and the wood can swell up.

Targets made from more modern materials don’t have this problem. Plastic and polymer targets can pretty much stay out in the elements indefinitely.
